General anesthesia is most commonly used in surgery. This type of anesthesia is utilized when the patient is in a state of unconsciousness. The patient will have no pain and little memory of the surgery.

Regional anesthesia is used to block pain to only a specific part or region of the body. A local anesthetic is injected into the area to numb the area. Common types of regional anesthesia are spinal and epidural anesthesia. You may or may not be unconscious when receiving regional anesthesia.

Local anesthesia is an anesthetic drug that numbs the tissue during minor procedures or done prior to administering regional anesthesia.
